Most drift fishermen I know use the Carolina rig for catfishing. Carolina rig is also known as a slip sinker rig. It is so named because of the use of a no roll slip sinker weight that is attached to the line. It is a kind of deep fishing rig which is set up so that the hook is well below the water surface.
To set up this rig, pull out approximately 5 feet of the line from your bait caster or bait runner reels and cut out a 12 to 24 inch long part of the line to form a leader line. Use one of its ends to tie up a Kahle hook of size 6/0 to 10/0 with a Snell knot. Tie the other end of the leader line to a barrel swivel using a Clinch knot or a Palomar knot. I prefer tying a Clinch knot here. Slip in a 5 oz no-roll weight in the main line and tie it to barrel swivel using a Palomar knot. I prefer a Palomar knot to any other kind of knot because it doesn't come off easily.
3 Swivel Casters
If you are fishing in tidal water or near a dam, you should use roll weights instead of no-roll weights. This will keep your line snag free even when there is a current. Some fishermen I know also use nails or screws as weights for their lines. I don't really know if that technique helps keep the line snag free or not. You are free to try it. Another kind of weight you can attach is a pyramid weight. It is especially useful in water with heavy current. Some people even use their fly fishing gear to catch catfish in summers when the fish aren't all that bait shy. I know many fishermen who have caught decent sized cats with their floated rigs in summers. Remember a floating rig only works in summers. You have to set up a deep fishing rig for autumns and winters.
Make sure your line can carry weights of over twenty pounds. Make sure that your reel has a clicker feature. The reels that have this feature make a clicking sound when the line is pulled. I prefer Abu Garcia reels. They are a bit pricey, but they work really well for a really long time. These reels do not need breaking in as some other reels do.
You can make other variations of Carolina rig for fishing. You can replace Kahle hooks with Treble hooks. A 2/0 Treble hook will do just fine for starters. You can also attach more than one leader line to the swivel. Each leader line may carry one hook or more. Explore every possibility and find out what works best for you. Every place is different. You might find that floating rigs work better than deep fishing rigs in some locations. I am here to give you ideas; they may or may not work for you.
